This nice paper takes further what one could call Dunford-Pettis theory, that is, the theory of what is known as properties DP, surjective DP and DP1. A natural property, the surjective DP1, is defined and shown to be equivalent to the DP1 for \(JB^\ast\)-triples \(E\). The surjective DP1 means, simply, that DP1 is fulfilled for all surjective operators on \(E\). Also, the \(JB^\ast\)-triple \(E\) has DP1 if and only if every surjection from \(E\) onto \(\ell_2\) is completely continuous on the unit sphere of \(E\). Next the authors study the DP-properties for spaces \(X\) formed by projective tensor products of two \(JB^\ast\)-triples, \(E\) and \(F\). The following are shown to be equivalent statements: (i) \(X\) has the DP, (ii) \(X\) has the surjective DP, (iii) \(X\) has no quotient space isomorphic to \(\ell_2\), (iv) \(X^\ast\) has the surjective DP, (v) every surjection from \(X\) onto \(\ell_2\) is completely continuous on the unit sphere of \(X\). A short but clear introductory Section 1 is given in order to put the results into perspective of earlier work of numerous authors; the reference list counts 43 items. Sections 2 and 3 contain the necessary ``machinery'', some of this also new, before turning to the study of DP-properties for \(JB^\ast\)-triples in Section 4 and the corresponding study for projective tensor products of two \(JB^\ast\)-triples in Section 5. From the preparation of the ``machinery'', we would like to mention the following result: Let \(E\) be a separable \(JB^\ast\)-triple with an infinite-dimensional Cartan factor representation. Then there exist normalized weakly null basic sequences \((x_n)\subset E\) and \((\rho_n)\subset E^\ast\) such that \([\rho_n]\) is isomorphic to \(\ell_2\) and \(\rho_n (x_n)=1\) for all \(n\).
