The Lie point symmetries for the nonlinear PDE system of the third order \[ \frac{\partial ^2 u}{\partial x \partial t}+\frac{\partial v}{\partial x}\frac{\partial v}{\partial t}=0, \frac{\partial v}{\partial t}+\frac{\partial ^3 v}{\partial x^3}+(\frac{\partial v}{\partial x})^3+3\frac{\partial v}{\partial x}\frac{\partial ^2 u}{\partial x^2}=0, u\in C^2(-\infty, \infty),v\in C^3(-\infty, \infty) \] are calculated and a complete group classification is given. The similarity variable \(\zeta\) for the case of traveling wave solutions and the determining equation are deduced. The possibility to enlarge the solution manifold by a method alternative to tanh-method is considered. It is also shown that the studied equation is of Painlevé-type and can be solved by the inverse scattering method. Here a criterion for the integrability via the Painlevé conjecture is given and families of solutions in terms of elliptic functions are derived via Lie's approach.
