The content of the present paper is a certain conjecture that the authors formulate, and they try to explain why it should be valid. Conjecture. Let \(X\) be a compact Kähler \(n\)-fold with Chern number \(c_1(X)<0\). Then for any \(k=n,n-1,\dots ,2\) the following inequalities \[ c_1^2(X)| c_1(X)| ^{k-2}H^{n-k}\leq\frac{2(k+1)}{k}c_2(X)| c_1(X)| ^{k-2}H^{n-k}\tag{*} \] hold for any nef class \(H\) on \(X\). Moreover, equality holds for the \(k\)-th level inequality with \(H^{n-k}\) effective if and only if \(X\) is a fibration whose general fiber is uniformized by the \(k\)-dimensional unit ball and \(H\) comes from the base. For \(k=n\) and \(k=2\), the inequalities (*) give well-known inequalities proved by \textit{S.T. Yau} [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 74, 1798--1799 (1977; Zbl 0355.32028)], and \textit{Y. Miyaoka} [in: Algebraic geometry, Proc. Symp., Sendai/Jap. 1985, Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 10, 449--476 (1987; Zbl 0648.14006)] respectively. The conjecture is verified, under certain conditions, for Kähler-Einstein toric Fano \(n\)-folds.
