A cardinal \(\lambda\) is a prevalent cardinal iff there exists a family \({\mathcal A}\subset {\mathcal P}(\lambda)\) with \(| {\mathcal A}| =\lambda\) and sup\(\{ | A| : A\in{\mathcal A}\}<\lambda\) such that any \(B\subset\lambda\) with \(| B| < cf(\lambda)\) is contained in some \(A\in {\mathcal A}\). For example, a regular cardinal is prevalent iff it is a successor, and all singular cardinals of countable cofinality are prevalent. The prevalent singular cardinals hypothesis (PSH) states that any singular cardinal is prevalent. PSH is a consequence of the generalized continuum hypothesis. This is a very weak assumption which holds ``in all currently known models of ZFC''. It can be used to decide on the interplay between several properties of topological spaces such as density and weight. For example, PSH implies that every topological space of density and weight \(\aleph_{\omega_1}\) is not hereditarily Lindelöf.
