Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic \(p\), and let \(G\) be a finite group with a subgroup \(H\) containing a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\). \textit{G. Mislin} [Comment. Math. Helv. 65, No. 3, 454-461 (1990; Zbl 0713.55009)] gave a necessary and sufficient criterion for invertibility of the restriction map \(H^*(G,k)\to H^*(H,k)\). \textit{P. Symonds} proved this result by showing that the functor \(H^*(-,k)\) contains every simple cohomological inflation functor as a composition factor [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 36, No. 5, 623-632 (2004; Zbl 1081.20062)]. The author provides a similar, entirely algebraic, proof of Mislin's theorem by means of modular representation theory.
