The Cauchy problem for the wave equation in \(n\) dimensions \[ (D_{tt} - A(x, D_x))U(t,x)=F(t,x), \] where \(A\) is a uniform elliptic operator is considered. In case the coefficients of the operator \(A\) fulfil some conditions and \(f, g\) and \(F\) belong to appropriate Sobolev spaces one proves the existence of a unique solution for the Cauchy problem. Further the solutions depend uniformly continuous on the metric. The author gives a new constructive proof for this result. The idea is to construct an explicit expression for the solution and deduce the stability from it. The initial data is decomposed into wave packets and the approximate solution is obtained by translating wave packets along the Hamiltonian flow.
