The authors discuss some theoretical aspects of certain classes of radial basis functions, albeit with useful consequences to applications, especially when potentially ill-conditioned linear interpolation systems are to be solved. They are related to radial basis functions such as the Gaussian or multiquadrics which have parameters that should tend to limits in order to make the approximants optimal [cf. \textit{B. J. C. Baxter}, Comput. Math. Appl. 24, No. 12, 1--6 (1992; Zbl 0764.41016)]. The authors solve some open problems posed by Fornberg et al. [\textit{B. Fornberg, G. Wright} and \textit{E. Larsson}, Comput. Math. Appl. 47, No. 1, 37--55 (2004; Zbl 1048.41017), \textit{E. Larsson} and \textit{B. Fornberg}, Comput. Math. Appl. 49, No. 1, 103--130 (2005; Zbl 1074.41012) and \textit{T. A. Driscoll} and \textit{B. Fornberg}, Comput. Math. Appl. 43, No. 3--5, 413--422 (2002; Zbl 1006.65013)].
