    In this paper the following boundary blow-up problem is considered: \[ -\varepsilon^2\Delta u=u(u-a(x))(1-u) \quad\text{in } \Omega,\qquad u| _{\partial \Omega}=\infty. \] Here \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb R^N\) with \(C^2\) boundary \(\partial \Omega\) and \(a(x)\) is a continuous function satisfying \(0<a(x)<1\) for \(x\in \overline{\Omega}\). It is shown that for small \(\varepsilon>0\), the equation has solutions with sharp interior layers and spikes, apart from the boundary layers. This extends results in \textit{E. N. Dancer} and \textit{S. Yan} [Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ. 20, No. 1, 93--118 (2004; Zbl 1154.35348)], which deals with a similar problem under the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition.
