The paper is dedicated to the stability analysis of boundary-value problems and shock waves for viscous perturbations of multidimensional systems of conservation laws. The focus is on the construction of symmetrizers for the linearized equations in the low-frequency regime. The paper extends the Evans-Lopatinski condition to viscous systems, in particular to magnetohydrodynamics. At the same time the boundary-layer theory is extended to parabolic or partially parabolic viscosities, Neumann or mixed-type parabolic boundary conditions, and systems in nonconservative form. A generalization of the Zumbrun-Serr-Rouset theorem, describing hyperbolic systems and boundary conditions as a limit of a reduced viscous system, is proved. The theory is illustrated by examples.
