The authors study necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of periodic solutions of a one-dimensional lattice with nearest-neighbor interaction of sublinear type between particles and external periodic excitations. The variational structure is lost by the presence of a possible linear damping, therefore the authors use the method of proof proposed by the reviewer in [Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 51, No.3, 333-345 (2000; Zbl 0999.82050), Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 52, No.3, 535-540 (2001; Zbl 1001.34038)], based on a priori bounds, topological degree and limiting arguments. It turns out that the system presents different properties depending if the number of particles is finite or infinite.
