The author presents a new proof of the strong convergence for sequences of uniformly bounded (in \(L^\infty\) or \(L^p\)) approximate solutions to the Cauchy problem \(u_t+f(u)_x=0\), \(u(x,0)=u_0(x)\) under the non-degeneracy condition \(\text{meas}\{u \mid f''(u){\,=\,}0\}{\,=\,}0\). In particular, the strong convergence of the vanishing viscosity approximate solutions is established. The author uses the compensated compactness theory, namely he applies the Tartar-Murat commutation lemma to specially selected families of Lax entropies.
