A study of a linear and nonlinear electron-acoustic solitary wave (EAW) in a nonmagnetized collisionless plasma consisting of a cold electron fluid, non-thermal hot electrons (obeying a non-thermal distribution) and stationary ions were carried out. The dispersion relations of EAWs are obtained. The application of the reductive perturbation theory to the basic set of fluid equations leads to a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation of the EAW. To investigate the effects of a higher-order contribution to nonlinear EAWs, the next order is taken in the perturbation theory. So a linearized KdV-type equation is obtained with an inhomogeneous term. This is solved by the application of the renormalization method of Kodama and Taniuti, the solution is a rarefaction soliton which includes the effects of the higher order nonlinearity and dispersion on the nonlinear EAW. From these reults the nonlinear equation of motion is obtained. The necessary condition of the existence of solitary waves and the prediction of the formation of a shock wave can be obtained.
