A nest \({\mathcal N}\) in a complex Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\) is a chain of closed subspaces that contains \(\{ 0\}\) and \({\mathcal H}\) and is closed under intersection and closed linear span. The set of all operators \(T\in {\mathcal B}({\mathcal H})\) such that \(T N \subseteq N\) for every \(N\in {\mathcal N}\) is the nest algebra \({\mathcal T}({\mathcal N})\). Suppose that \(N \mapsto \widetilde{N}\) is an order homomorphism of \({\mathcal N}\) into itself. Then \({\mathcal U}=\{ X\in {\mathcal B}({\mathcal H}):~XN\subseteq \widetilde{N},~\forall N\in {\mathcal N}\}\) is a weakly closed \({\mathcal T}({\mathcal N})\)-bimodule. The authors consider the following question. For given two vectors \(x, y\in {\mathcal H}\), is there a compact operator \(T\in {\mathcal U}\) such that \(Tx=y\)? Denote \(N_x=\land\{ N\in {\mathcal N}:~x\in N\}\). If \((N_x)_{-}\neq N_x\), then \(y\in \widetilde{N_x}\) is a necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a compact interpolating operator in \({\mathcal U}\). Actually, in this case, a rank-one operator can be found in \({\mathcal U}\) that interpolates \(x\) and \(y\). The case \((N_x)_{-}= N_x\) is more complicated:\ there exists a compact operator \(T\in {\mathcal U}\) such that \(Tx=y\) if and only if \(y\in \widetilde{N_x}\) and some net of numbers, which depend on \(x\), \(y\), and \({\mathcal N}\), converges to zero.
