An automorphism \(\sigma\neq 1\) of a vector space is called quadratic if \((\sigma-1)^2=0\). A quadratic pair is a vector space \(V\) of finite dimension over a field \(F\) together with a linear group \(G\leq\text{GL}(V)\) generated by those quadratic elements \(\sigma\in G\) that satisfy \(1+F(\sigma-1)\subseteq G\). In this situation, one can define root subgroups of \(G\) (in terms of the quadratic elements). In the paper under review, the author determines the groups \(G\) that are generated by three root subgroups without containing a pair of commuting root subgroups. These groups \(G\) are of type \(\text{SU}_3\) over suitable fields or skew fields.
