The paper deals with a famous cubic system introduced by James and Lloyd [\textit{E. M.~James, N. G.~Lloyd}, IMA J. Appl. Math. 47, No.~2, 163--171 (1991; Zbl 0743.34037)]. To simplify the complicated computations for deriving a necessary and sufficient conditions for such a system to have eight limit cycles the authors introduce some new parameters and propose a strategy for solving a semi-algebraic system which contains Lyapunov quantities.
