The authors study the so-called Suliciu relaxation approximation of the \(p\)-system of hyperbolic equations: \(\partial_t u_1 -\partial_x u_2 =0,\) \(\partial_t u_2 -\partial_x p(u_1) =0\). The Suliciu approximation is the relaxed system: \(\partial_t u_1 -\partial_x u_2 =0\), \(\partial_t u_2 - \partial_x v =0\), \(\partial_t v - \mu \partial_x u_2 = (p(u_1) -v)/\varepsilon\). Here \(\varepsilon>0\) is a singular parameter. The nonlinearity \(p\) is assumed to be strictly increasing and the parameter \(\mu>0\) is sufficiently large. The main result of the paper is the convergence of the approximate solution \(u_\varepsilon = u^0 +\varepsilon u^1_\varepsilon\) to the classical solution \(u^0\) of the unperturbed \(p\)-system. Moreover, they provide estimates of the first order term \(u^1_\varepsilon\) of the asymptotic expansion.
