In this fundamental paper, the authors present a criterion for the existence of a fixed point for an affine action of a given group \(G\) on a compact convex space. From this theorem the authors derive that a discrete countable group is amenable if and only if there exists an invariant probability measure for any action of the group on a Hilbert cube. The authors, while proving the cited Theorem 2.12, actually find a proof of the theorems of Bogoljubov-Day, Zimmer and J. von Neumann. The authors also discuss the amenable properties of the group of all isometries of the Urysohn universal homogeneous metric space. The paper also contains some conjectures for further study and research.
