The main goal of this paperis to carry out a rigorous stability and error analysis for the finite element approximation of the time-dependent Stokes equation using the first version of the consistent splitting method. The authors' show that it indeed leads to optimal error estimates for both velocity and pressure provided that the inf-sup condition is satisfied.
