Let \(p(x,y) = b_0(x) + b_1(x) y + \cdots \in \mathbb{F}_q[x,y]\) be a polynomial and set \(R = \mathbb{F}_q[x,y]/(p(x,y))\) and \(N = \{ g \in \mathbb{F}_q[x] : \text{ deg}\, g < \text{ deg}\, b_0 \}\). \textit{K. Scheicher} and \textit{J. M. Thuswaldner} [Finite Fields Appl. 9, No. 3, 322--333 (2003; Zbl 1031.11003)] characterized those polynomials \(p(x,y)\) for which every \(f\in R\) has a finite respectively periodic digital expansion \[ f = \sum_{i\geq 0} d_i(x) y^i \] with \(d_i(x) \in N\). The present paper provides a more detailed study. The authors determine the length of the expansion if it is finite, characterize the period if it is periodic and also discuss non-periodic infinite expansion.
