The aim of this very interesting note is to prove the existence of a (regular Hausdorff) space \(X\) such that \(X\) is hereditary Lindelöf, nonseparable and its square contains a \(\sigma\)-discrete dense set. This construction answers a question by \textit{V. V. Tkachuk} raised in his paper [Quaest. Math. 28, No. 4, 409--424 (2005; Zbl 1091.54008)], where he constructs such a space assuming the continuum hypothesis. The space considered in this note is essentially the \(L\) space constructed by the author in a previous paper [J. Am. Math. Soc. 19, No. 3, 717--736 (2006; Zbl 1107.03056)].
