The authors have studied the influence of transversal dimension in the species separation in a thermogravitational column. It is well known that the coupling of thermodiffusion with convection in a thermogravitational column can generate more separation of species than the one given by pure thermodiffusion. It is therefore desirable to control the convection in the fluid in order to improve the species separation. To study the effect of convection, a three-dimensional model consisting of continuity, momentum, energy and specy concentration is considered in a thermogravitational column. A steady state solution is derived for a long column. The result is validated with an experiment which shows a good agreement between theory and experiment for the aspect ratios of 3.33, 1 and 0.5. The separation mainly depends on the height of the column. The experiment is performed for an aqueous solution of CuSO\(_4\). It is desired to have more experiments to generalise the results.
