Variations on a theme of Burns and Medvedev. (Q2469775)

The aim of the paper under review is to give a short and conceptual proof of a result of \textit{R.~G.~Burns} and \textit{Yu.~Medvedev} [J.~Group Theory 7, No.~4, 533-541 (2004; Zbl 1073.20021)] that states that a relatively free pro-\(p\) group is \(p\)-adic analytic if and only if it is finitely generated and virtually nilpotent. This approach also yields analogous, interesting results for other types of groups. We refer to the clear and lucid introduction for the details.
