This is a massive, detailed, and comprehensive book on the theory of Toeplitz operators and Toeplitz algebras (as well as pre-Toeplitz algebras) on the Bergman space (especially, the unit disk and the upper half plane cases) and its variations, beyond the Hardy space (i.e., the torus case). The Bergman space over a domain with a smooth boundary (such as the unit (open) disk and the upper half-plane) in the complex plane is defined to be the \(L^2\)-subspace of all analytic functions on the domain. The pre-Toeplitz algebra means the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by the Bergman projection from the usual \(L^2\)-space on a domain to the Bergman space and a \(C^*\)-algebra of defining symbols that are (certain) functions on the closure of the domain, and it is shown (as just one of many things) that the pre-Toeplitz algebra has some slightly different properties (in some points of view such as representation theory and algebraic structure) from the Toeplitz algebras generated by Toeplitz operators that are defined by taking the restriction of the defining symbols to the Bergman space by multiplying the Bergman projection. The content is quite concrete and contains various kinds of theorems (such as boundedness, compactness, Fredholmness, spectrums, invariant subspaces, and so on) and examples (case by case) for Toeplitz operators (and their commutators and semi-commutators) and Toeplitz algebras with defining symbols that are either continuous, piecewise continuous with certain discontinuities, or measurable and bounded (or even unbounded) of types with radial or angular parameters on the unit disk or the upper half plane. The book is quite easy to read and understand. Computations as well are explicit and detailed. Several nice figures are also helpful to see what the spectra of operators are and understand well several important meanings as in hyperbolic geometry that govern commutativity of \(C^*\)-algebras generated by Toeplitz operators with those defining symbols (this is the punch line of this elaborate book). Included Highlights of the chapters in addition to Preface and Introduction will be helpful for the readers to decide and read this book properly and effectively. Furthermore, Bibliographical Remarks for items in the Bibliography will also be helpful for further reading.
