This monograph develops a theory of canonical factorizations for various classes of matrix and operator functions, where the functions are represented in the form of a transfer function of an input-state-output linear system. The factorization theory based on the state space approach has been developed in many directions since the classical monograph of the first three authors [\textit{H.\,Bart, I.\,Gohberg} and \textit{M.\,A.\thinspace Kaashoek}, ``Minimal factorization of matrix and operator functions'' (Operator Theory: Advances and Applications 1) (Basel, Boston, Stuttgart:\ Birkhäuser Verlag) (1979; Zbl 0424.47001)]. A recent book of the four authors [``Factorization of matrix and operator functions.\ The state space method'' (Operator Theory: Advances and Applications 178) (Basel:\ Birkhäuser) (2008; Zbl 1149.47001)] reflects these developments and is devoted mostly to non-canonical factorizations and degree 1 factorizations, while the present monograph concentrates on canonical factorizations. As a result, the overlap between the two books is minor, and together they constitute a rich and far-reaching update of the 1979 monograph. The parts and chapters are as follows: Part I: Convolution equations, canonical factorization and the state space method. Chapter 1: The role of canonical factorization in solving convolution equations. Chapter 2: The state space method and factorization. Part II: Convolution equations with rational matrix symbols. Chapter 3: Explicit solutions using realizations. Chapter 4: Factorization of non-proper rational matrix functions. Part III: Equations with non-rational symbols. Chapter 5: Factorization of matrix functions analytic in a strip. Chapter 6: Convolution equations and the transport equation. Chapter 7: Wiener--Hopf factorization and factorization indices. Part IV: Factorization of selfadjoint rational matrix functions. Chapter 8: Preliminaries concerning minimal factorizations. Chapter 9: Factorization of positive definite rational matrix functions. Chapter 10: Pseudo-spectral factorizations of selfadjoint rational matrix functions. Chapter 11: Review of the theory of matrices in indefinite inner product spaces. Part V: Riccati equations and factorization. Chapter 12: Canonical factorization and Riccati equations. Chapter 13: The symmetric algebraic Riccati equation. Chapter 14: \(J\)-spectral factorization. Part VI: Factorizations and symmetries. Chapter 15: Factorization of positive real rational matrix functions. Chapter 16: Contractive rational matrix functions. Chapter 17: \(J\)-unitary rational matrix functions. Part VII: Applications to \(J\)-spectral factorizations. Chapter 18: Applications to the rational Nehari problem. Chapter 19: Review of some control theory for linear systems. Chapter 20: H-infinity control applications. The book is self-contained and accessible for specialists in different areas of mathematics, science, and engineering. When the book was at the final phase of the preparation to publication, Israel Gohberg, the second author, passed away at the age of 81. His three co-authors distinguished his leading role as one of initiators and driving forces in the development of the state-space method for solving various problems in analysis.
