Recent progress in string theory has led to new constructions of stable vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds which admit a elliptic fibration structure. Friedman, Morgan and Witten have developed a geometrical construction of stable bundles in terms of spectral data. This construction solves the physical anomaly equation, a topological constraint that demands that the difference of the second Chern classes of the tangent bundle of the Calabi-Yau space and of the vector bundle is an effective curve class. Of particular interest for physics are constructions which allow to solve this constraint to zero, as it describes pure perturbative string models. The authors give a new construction of vector bundles that satisfy this constraint. For this they apply the method of vector bundle extensions of given spectral cover bundles, bundles which are pulled back from the base manifold of the given Calabi-Yau space and extensions by line bundles. The authors give a full stability proof of these bundles, that is, they determine the range in the Kähler cone in which the extension bundles are stable.
