The direct problem of scattering of a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave from an infinite cylinder with an open arc in \(\mathbb R^2\) as the cross section is treated, assuming that a part of the cylinder can be coated with an unknown material in order to avoid detection. Considering that the electric field is polarized leads to a mixed boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation. The required scattered field has to satisfy the Sommerfeld radiation condition. The problem is reformulated as a system of boundary integral equations. Using Fredholm's theory the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the system is proved. Editorial remark: In the paper [\textit{P. Krutitskii}, Int. J. Appl. Math. Res. 2, No. 1, 40--43 (2013; Zbl 1254.35244)] it is mentioned that this article contains an error.
