The present paper deals with the spectral properties of the Cesàro operator on Banach spaces \(X\) of analytic functions. A unified approach to the study of the subdecomposability of this operator on Banach spaces of analytic functions on the unit disc \({\mathbb D}\) is proposed. The following conditions on \(X\) are supposed to be satisfied: (1) For all \(f\in X\) and any univalent function \(\phi\) of \({\mathbb D}\), there exist positive constants \(\gamma\) and \(c\) such that \[ \| C_{\phi} f\| _{X} \leq c \frac{\| f\| _{X}}{(1 - | \phi(0)| )^{\gamma}}. \] (2) There exists a fixed integer \(k \geq 1\) such that, for any function \(\psi\) analytic in a neighborhood of \(\overline{\mathbb D}\), the norm of the operator \(M_{\psi}\) of multiplication by \(\psi\) satisfies \[ \| M_{\psi}\| \leq c \| \psi\| _{A^k(\overline{\mathbb D})}, \] where \(A^k(\overline{\mathbb D})\) is the space of analytic functions in \(\mathbb D\) having \({\mathcal C}^k\)-extension to \(\overline{\mathbb D}\), with the usual norm \[ \| f \| _{A^k(\overline{\mathbb D})} = \sum\limits_{j=0}^{k} sup_{z\in \overline{\mathbb D}} | f^{(j)}(z)|. \] The spectral picture of the Cesàro operator on such spaces as well as the representation of the resolvent and the left inverse is described.
