Let \(f:[0,1]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\) be a real-valued function and \(p>0\). For any nonempty closed subset \(A\) of \([0,1]\), we call \(A\)-family any collection \(\mathcal{T}=\{I_{i}\}\) of non-overlapping subintervals of \([0,1]\) with end-points in \(A\) and we define the \(p\)-variation \(v_{p}(f,A)\) of \(f\) on \(A\) to be the supremum of the quantities \(\sum_{I\in \mathcal{T}}| f(I)| ^{p}\) over all the \(A\)-families \(\mathcal{T}\) of \(A\), where \(f(I):=f(b)-f(a),\) for the interval \(I=(a,b)\). The main result of the paper is to prove that if \(p\geq 1,\) then a function \(f\) of bounded \(p\)-variation is continuous (if and) only if the function \(A\mapsto v_{p}(f,A)\) is continuous (for the topology induced by the Hausdorff metric). In the last section, the author provides a new description of the Wiener class \(W_{p}^{\ast }\) (which is an important subclass of the space of functions of bounded \(p\)-variation).
