A vector bundle \(E\) on a smooth polarized projective variety \(V \subset {\mathbb P}^m\) is \(r\)-generated if there exists a surjection \(\bigoplus_{i=1}^r {\mathcal O}(a_i) \rightarrow E\), \(a_i \in {\mathbb Z}\). By a result of G. Faltings since 1981, if \(X = {\mathbb P}^m\) then any vector bundle on \(X\) generated by \(r \leq m\) sections splits [see \textit{G. Faltings}, Invent. Math. 62, 393--401 (1980; Zbl 0456.14027)]. The aim of this paper is to extend the above result of Faltings to hypersurfaces. Theorem 2, the main result of the paper, reads: Let \(E\) be a \(r\)-generated rank \(n\) vector bundle on a smooth hypersurface \(X\) of dimension \(m \geq 3\). Then \(E\) splits (i.e. \(E\) is a sum of line bundles) if: (1) \(r \leq m-1\); (2) \(r = m\) and \(n \neq m/2\); (3) \(r = m\), \(n = m/2\), and \(X\) is generic of degree \(d \geq 3\). In addition the authors show that at least in dimensions \(\leq 5\) the condition for genericity in (3) is necessary.
