The author studies a compact Riemann surface \(X\) of genus \(g>1\) admitting commutative anticonformal involutions \(a\) and \(b\), where \(a\) is an \((M-q)\)-symmetry (i.e., \(a\) fixes \(g+1-q\) disjoint simple closed curves) and \(b\) is an \((M-q^{\prime})\)-symmetry. For the conformal involution \(ab\) of \(X\), let \(p\) denote the genus of the orbit space \(X/\langle ab \rangle\), namely \(ab\) is a \(p\)-hyperelliptic involution. In this situation the author gives the possible ranges of \(p\) in terms of \(q\) and \(q^{\prime}\) according as each of the fixed point sets of \(a\) and \(b\) separates \(X\) or not, and shows that all the values in the ranges are attained. Furthermore, the existence and uniqueness of \((M-q)\)- and \((M-q^{\prime})\)-symmetries are studied, and those results imply several theorems of \textit{S. M. Natanzon} concerning \(M\)- and \((M-1)\)-symmetries [Trans. Mosc. Math. Soc. 1989, 1--51 (1989); translation from Tr. Mosk. Mat. O.-va 51, 3--53 (1988; Zbl 0692.14020)].
