Consider a finite Galois extension \(E\) of a nonarchimedean local field \(F\). The main result of the paper under review is Theorem 3.3: Let \({\mathcal X}_F\) denote the part of the smooth dual of \(GL(n,F)\) consisting of representations with Iwahori fixed vectors. Then \({\mathcal X}_F\) is a smooth affine complex variety, the ``extended quotient'' of \((\mathbb C^\times)^n\) by the symmetric group \(S_n\), and the base change \({\mathcal X}_F\to{\mathcal X}_E\) is induced by the map \((\mathbb C^\times)^n\to (\mathbb C^\times)^n \) defined by \((z_1,\dots,z_n)\mapsto (z^f_1,\dots,z^f_n)\), with \(f\) the residual degree. For the groups \(GL(1)\) and \(GL(2)\), the authors compute the K-groups with the base change map (related to the Baum-Connes conjecture): \(\sqcup \mathbb T_\chi \to \sqcup \mathbb T_\eta\) (Theorem 5.10 and Theorem 6.3).
