The classical Noether inequality for surfaces of general type states: \(K^2\geq 2p_g-4\) where \(p_g=\dim H^0(K)\). Evidently one would like to have a similar result in higher dimensions. This article provides a three-dimensional inequality, namely: Every minimal smooth three-dimensional variety of general type fulfills \(K_X^3\geq {2\over 3}\left(2p_g-5\right)\). In the special case where \(K_X\) is ample, this has been proven before by \textit{M. Cheng} [Math. Res. Lett. 11, 833--852 (2004; Zbl 1079.14047)]. As an application, the authors give a criterion for threefolds \(X\) which ensures that \(X\) is fibered by curves of genus \(2\).
