    The bulk of this paper is its first theorem, which uses the notions of functional identity and \(d\)-freeness. To state this result let \(p(x_1,x_2,x_3)\) be the linearization of \(x^3\). The theorem is: If \(L\) is a 6-free Lie subring of a ring \(R\) with \(p(L^3)\subseteq L\), and if \(T\colon L\to R\) is additive and satisfies (*) \(T(x^3)=T(x)x^2-xT(x)x+x^2T(x)\) for all \(x\in L\), then \(4T(x)=xq+qx\) for some \(q\in R\) and all \(x\in L\). -- The proof of this theorem is a long and complex computation. This result, and another, is used to prove the main theorem of the paper: If \(R\) is a 2-torsion free prime ring and \(T\colon R\to R\) is additive and satisfies (*) then \(4T(x)=xq+qx\) for some \(q\) in the symmetric Martindale quotient ring of \(R\) and all \(x\in R\). An application of this latter result is made to prime rings with involution.
