This paper deals with the periodic boundary value problem: \[ \begin{cases}(a_\varepsilon(x)u_\varepsilon'(x))'=f(x),\quad\text{ a.e. on } [0,1],\\ a_\varepsilon(0)=a_\varepsilon(1)=0, \end{cases} \] where \(\varepsilon>0\) is a small parameter, \(a_\varepsilon(x)=a(\frac{x}{\varepsilon}),\) \(f\in H^{-1}((0,1),\mathbb{R})\) and the function \(a:\mathbb{R}\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}\) is measurable, essentially bounded, and periodic. In particular, there exist \(0<\alpha\leq\beta<\infty\) such that \[ \alpha\leq a(y)\leq\beta \] and \(a\) is \(T-\)periodic. Moreover \(f=f_0+f_1'\) where \(f_0, f_1\in L^2((0,1);\mathbb{R}).\) Here \('=\frac{d}{dx}\) denotes the distributional derivative. In [\textit{C. Cioranescu} and \textit{P. Donato}, An introduction to homogenization. Oxford Lecture Series in Mathematics and its Applications. 17. Oxford: Oxford University Press (1999; Zbl 0939.35001), Thm. 6.1], it is proved that as \(\varepsilon\to0,\) \(u_\varepsilon\to u_0\) weakly in \(H^1_0((0,1),\mathbb{R})\), where \(a_0\) satisfies \[ (a_0u_0'(x))'=f(x) \] and the constant coefficient is given by \[ \frac{1}{a_0}=\frac{1}{T}\int_0^T\frac{1}{a(y)}dy. \] In this paper, the author assumes that the Fourier coefficients of \(f_1\) given by the \(H^{-1}\)-data have fast decay and then obtains corresponding approximation orders for the difference \[ \| u_\varepsilon-u_0\|_\infty. \] The proof is based on direct estimations.
