The authors study the local and global properties of positive solutions to the fast diffusion equation \(u_t=\Delta u^m\), with \(\frac{(d-2)_+}{d} <m<1\). For the Cauchy problem posed in \(\mathbb R^d\), they prove weak Harnack and elliptic Harnack inequalities. Moreover they derive sharp global positivity estimates and a global Harnack principle. In the case of mixed initial and homogeneous boundary value problem in a bounded domain of \(\mathbb R^d\) the weak, intrinsic and elliptic Harnack inequality are given for intermediate times. The connection between the global Harnack principles and the fine asymptotic behavior is also investigated.
