The authors introduce a new projection in a smooth Banach space which generalizes the metric projection in a Hilbert space. If \(E\) is a smooth, strictly convex, reflexive Banach space, the metric projection \(P_C\) of \(E\) onto a nonempty, closed, convex subset \(C\) is characterized by \(\langle J(x - P_C x), P_C x- y\rangle \geq 0\) for all \(x\) in \(E\) and \(y\in C\), where \(J:E\to E^*\) is the normalized duality mapping. If \(C\) is a nonempty, closed, convex subset of a smooth Banach space, the authors define a new projection \(R_C\) called a sunny generalized nonexpansive retraction. In the setting of smooth, strictly convex, reflexive Banach spaces, \(R_C\) is characterized by \(\langle x - R_C x, J(R_C x)- J(y)\rangle \geq 0\) for all \(x\in E\) and \(y\in C\). The authors also discuss the Mosco convergence of sequences of sunny generalized nonexpansive retracts of \(E\) when \(E\) is a uniformly convex Banach space with a Fréchet differentiable norm.
