This book is a contribution on new methods for boundary stabilization and estimation of problems of flow control with applications to turbulence, weather forecasting and magnetohydrodynamics. After a first section, briefly introducing some useful mathematical tools and definitions in feedback control, the two following parts present a 2D model of convection for an (incompressible) thermal fluid. Using singular perturbation theory, the stabilization properties of the system are analyzed in the large Prandtl numbers regime, and compared to simulations. In Chapters 4 and 5, a boundary control criterion is then applied to the stabilization of the linearized Navier-Stokes channel flow at arbitrarily high Reynolds numbers. Chapters 6 and 7 are then devoted to MHD channel flows (Hartmann problem). Boundary stabilization and estimation are studied in great detail. Finally (Chapter 8) for a 2D Navier-Stokes channel flow, the authors study the problem of transition of the velocity field from one steady state to another in a fast and stable way. A brief final section presents some open problems, including the case of compressible fluids and some aspects of nonlinear control.
