This research monograph offers a broad coverage of the recent developments in the realm of concepts and applications of type-2 fuzzy sets and fuzzy systems. In contrast to type-1 fuzzy sets (and their numeric membership functions), this generalization of information granules comes with non-numeric membership functions. The corresponding membership grades are treated as fuzzy sets or intervals defined over the unit interval. The key motivation behind the emergence of type-2 fuzzy sets comes with a way of capturing the differences in the semantics of generic linguistic terms formalized by fuzzy sets. Interestingly, this argument is highly visible throughout the entire book. The monograph is arranged into 17 concise and well-focused chapters covering a wealth of applications and methodologies of type-2 fuzzy sets. Each of these chapters brings some useful motivating notes and elaborates on the algorithms pertinent to the problem at hand. The first two chapters provide a comprehensive introduction to type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic and help the reader appreciate the most essential fundamentals of the theory. The remaining chapters reflect a wealth of the applied facets of these fuzzy systems. The main categories of applications covered here include: control systems and intelligent controllers, modular neural networks, image recognition, plant monitoring, autonomous robots and noise cancellation. All in all, the book provides a badly needed and a timely compendium of applications of type-2 fuzzy systems and offers the reader a sound overview of design techniques supporting the construction of such architectures.
