Here is a book of moderate size (273 pp.) but very rich in information (multum in parvo) on a new and actual domain ``Analog and Mixed Systems (AMS)''. To understand the importance of AMS, we must take into account some recent facts: miniaturization occurring in semiconductor technology; the existence of design automation tools for digital systems; for analog systems, there exist only methods for some dedicated subjects; modern CMOS technology allows to build any passive and active components in integrated systems on a single chip, whence the term of System-on-Chip (SOC). Since many systems involve the presence on the chip of analog as well as of discrete signals, there is an acute need of disposing of tools for describing integrated systems which processes Analog and Mixed Signal (AMS). To this need, the present book gives an excellent answer. To have an idea of the topics covered in the book, we give its Contents: Preface; 1) Introduction; Part I: Analog Design Methodologies 2) Foundations of Designs for AMS Systems; 3) Analog and Mixed-Signal Design Strategies; Part II: Generic Behavioral Modeling; 4) Time-Domain Generic Behavioral Models 5) Frequency-Domain Generic Behavioral Models; Part III: Top-Down Heterogeneous Optimization; 7) Conclusions; Symbols and Abbreviations; Index; List of Figures; List of Tables; Listings. The area of the covered topics is very large: design flows for AMS, selection theory, sigma-delta modulators, sampled data systems, equivalent low pass models (Hilbert transforms), polyphase signals, RF receiver front-end architecture, and various optimization methodologies. The book is written at a high mathematical and abstraction level, but the lecturer is carried at numerical strategies; C+++ and MATLAB are largely used in the book. The authors are active workers at the Katholieke Universiteit in Belgium and the end chapter references show their numerous contributions on the book subject. This volume will be an excellent support to research and design engineers working in AMS. It is a beautiful example of the power of mathematical tools in industrial problems.
