The group \(G=SL(4,\mathbb{R})\) is considered as well as the \(G\)-conjugacy classes of skew symmetric matrices with the representants \(Q_1=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} J&0\\0&-J\end{smallmatrix}\right)\) and \(Q_2=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} J&0\\0&J\end{smallmatrix}\right)\), where \(J=\left(\begin{smallmatrix} 0&-1\\1&0\end{smallmatrix}\right)\); \(H_1\) and \(H_2\) are the symplectic subgroups defined by \(Q_1\) and \(Q_2\) and \(H'_1\) and \(H'_2\) are the centralizers of \(Q_1\) and \(Q_2\), respectively. The unitary representation \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}\) of \(G\) corresponding to the trivial character \(\lambda\) is considered. A discrete/continuous alternative is emphasized, i.e. it is shown that the restriction of \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}\) to \(H_1\) and \(H'_1\) is a direct sum of irreducible unitary representations and that the restriction to \(H_2\) and \(H'_2\) has a continuous spectrum. The representations of \(H_1\) and \(H_2\) which appear in the corresponding restriction of \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}\) are determined as a direct sum of unitary representations. A natural model is given to obtain the branching law. The concept of pseudodual pairs of subgroups in a reductive Lie group is introduced and it is used to find another interpretation of the restrictions of \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}\) to the pseudodual pair \(H_1,\;H_2\). It is emphasized that this notion is extremely useful for the analysis of the spectrum in the admissible situation and for the obtaining of a complete branching law. A conjecture is formulated about the multiplicity of representations in the restriction of representations \(A_{\mathfrak{q}}\) of semisimple Lie groups \(G\) to subgroups \(H\) which are centralizers of involutions and a natural generalization of the Blattner-type formulas is provided. These results are used to construct automorphic representations of \(\text{Sp}(2,\mathbb{R})\) and \(\text{GL}(2,\mathbb{C})\) which are in the discrete spectrum of a congruence subgroup.
