The purpose of this paper is to show that various imaging techniques can be formulated as inverse problems of partial differential equations. Some image reconstruction techniques such as X-ray computed tomography (CT), single particle emission tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), near infrared imaging (NIR), electrical impedance tomography (EIT), seismic imaging, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and ultrasound tomography are considered. The first three techniques are based on the transport equation, while the last three are governed by the wave equation.
