Consider the group \(G:=(\mathbb{C}^*)^k\times SL_2(\mathbb{C})\). Let \(\chi_1,\ldots,\chi_s\) be a sequence of characters of the torus \((\mathbb{C}^*)^k\), and let \(n_1,\ldots, n_s\) be a sequence of positive integers. Denote by \(V_{\chi_i, n_i}\) the \(G\)-module of binary forms of degree \(n_i\) with the coefficients in \(\mathbb{C}\) on which \(SL_2(\mathbb{C})\) acts in the natural way by linear substitutions of variables and \((\mathbb{C}^*)^k\) acts by scalar multiplications determined by \(\chi_i\). Consider the \(G\)-module \(V:=V_1\oplus\cdots\oplus V_s\). The author obtains a criterion for the finiteness of the number of orbits in the closure of a given \(G\)-orbit \(G\cdot v\) in \(V\). The answer is given in terms of the sequence \((\chi_1, n_1),\ldots, (\chi_n, n_n)\) and the multiplicities of linear factors of the binary forms \(v_i\), where \(v=v_1+\cdots+v_s\), \(v_i\in V_{\chi_i, n_i}\). An analogous criterion for the action of \(G\) on the projective space \(\mathbb{P}(V)\) is obtained as well.
