This paper deals with existence and regularity of solutions of semilinear wave equations \[ u''(t)+Au(t)=f(t,u(t))+h(t),\quad u(0)=u_0,\quad u'(0)=u_1 \] in a Hilbert space \(H\). Here, \(A\) is the operator associated with a form defined on \(V\times V\) and satisfying Garding's inequality, \(V\) is a Hilbert space such that \(V\subset H \subset V^*\) and the function \(f\) is continuous and satisfies the Lipschitz condition with respect to the first variable. As a particular cases of the general formulation, some results for Volterra integrodifferential equations of hyperbolic type are given.
