    For \(t>0\), the Szász-Mirakyan operator \(S_{t}\) is defined by \[ S_{t}f(x):=e^{-xt}\,\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}f\Big(\frac{k}{t}\Big)\frac{(tx)^{k}}{k!}, \quad x\geq 0, \] where \(f\) is any real function defined on \([0,\,\infty)\) such that \(S_{t}| f| (x)<\infty\), \(x\geq 0\). In this note the authors give explicit expressions for the best constants in preservation of global smoothness, as defined by \[ C_{t}(\delta):=\sup_{f \in \mathcal{L}}\frac{w(S_{t}f;\delta)}{w(f;\delta)},\quad \delta>0, \quad C_{t}:=\sup_{\delta>0}C_{t}(\delta), \] where \[ w(f;\delta):=\sup\big\{| f(x)-f(y)| \,:x,y\geq 0,\;| x-y| \leq \delta\big\},\quad \delta>0, \] is the usual first modulus of continuity of \(f\) and \(\mathcal{L}\) is the set of all real functions defined on \([0,\,\infty)\) such that \(0<w(f;1)<\infty\).
