    The author investigates existence of solutions of the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in one space dimension: \[ \mathcal{D} u + m u =w u, \] \[ \square w +M w = u^\dag u, \] where \(m \) and \(M \) are positive numbers, \(u\) and \(w\) are complex-valued and real-valued functions, respectively. The Dirac operator \(\mathcal{D}\) is given by \(\mathcal{D} = i \gamma_0 \partial_t + i\gamma_1 \partial_x\) with \[ \gamma_0 = \left( \begin{matrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \\ \end{matrix} \right), \quad \gamma_1 = \left( \begin{matrix} 0 & -1 \\ 1 & 0 \\ \end{matrix} \right). \] The operator \(\square\) is defined by \(\square = \partial^2_t -c^2 \partial^2_x\). The author is mainly interested in existence of solutions of the system when the \(w\) component belongs to \(H^s\) with \(s \leq {\frac 12}\). The case \(s={\frac 12}\) is referred to as the critical case in the literature. By detailed estimates on solutions, under certain assumptions, the author proves the existence of a unique local solution for the system in the critical as well as super critical case. In addition, the existence of a unique global solution in \(L^2 \times H^s\) with \(s < {\frac 12}\) is also established.
