This short paper contains unpublished results from the author's Ph.D. thesis from 1968. The main results is: If \(T\) is a Sylow 2-subgroup of a finite simple group and if \(T\) has nilpotence class \(n>1\), then \(Z(T)\) has exponent at most \(2^{n-1}\). This follows from two theorems: (1) If \(T\) is a Sylow 2-subgroup of a finite group of nilpotence class at most \(n+1\), then \(\mho^n(Z(T))\) is weakly closed in \(T\) with respect to \(G\); and (2) If \(T\) is a Sylow 2-subgroup of a finite group and \(W\subseteq\mho^1(Z(T))\) is weakly closed in \(T\) with respect to \(G\), then \(W\subseteq O_{2',2}(G)\). -- In fact the first result can be generalized to any prime \(p\). Then if \(P\) has nilpotence class at most \(n(p-1)+1\), then \(\mho^n(Z(P))\) is weakly closed in \(P\) with respect to \(G\). As a bonus the author adds a further unpublished result. Let \(G\) be a finite group, \(P\in\text{Syl}_p(G)\). Set \(M=\langle C_G(\mho^1(Z(P)),N_G(J(P))\rangle\). Let \(H\) be a \(p\)-subgroup such that \(Z(H)\) is a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(C(H)\), then \(N_G(H)\leq M\).
