\textit{G. Frey} [J. Algebra 26, 202--207 (1973; Zbl 0264.12105)] proved the existence of an algebraic variety \(V\) defined over \({\mathbb Q}\) with no rational points over the maximal abelian extension \({\mathbb Q}^{\text{ab}}\) of \({\mathbb Q}\). The aim of the paper under review is to have a closer look at algebraic varieties \(V\) defined over \({\mathbb Q}\) with no abelian points, i.e., such that \(V({\mathbb Q}^{\text{ab}})=\emptyset\). The author obtains a number of examples of this type: (i) for every odd \(d>1\), an explicit family of degree \(d\), dimension \(d-2\) diagonal hypersurfaces without \({\mathbb Q}^{\text{ab}}\)-points; (ii) for every number field \(K\), a genus one curve \(C\) defined over \({\mathbb Q}\) with no \(K^{\text ab}\)-points; (iii) for every \(g\geq 4\), an algebraic curve \(C\) defined over \({\mathbb Q}\) of genus \(g\) with no \({\mathbb Q}^{\text{ab}}\)-points. All the proofs are obtained by showing that in fact there exists a place \(v\) of the number field \(K\) under consideration such that \(V(K^{\text{ab}})_v=\emptyset\). The paper also contains a number of interesting open problems.
