Let \(X\) be a complex Banach space and suppose that \(A\) is a sectorial operator on \(X\) which admits an \(H^{\infty}\)-calculus. A closed operator \(B\) on \(X\) is called a (multiplicative) perturbation of \(A\) if \(D(B)=D(A)\) and there exists \(C>0\) such that \(C^{-1}\| Ax\|\leq\| Bx\|\leq C\| Ax\|\) for every \(x\in D(A)\). The aim of the paper is to find conditions under which such perturbations, if sectorial, have an \(H^{\infty}\)-calculus as well. For this purpose, the author introduces the class of strongly triangular operators on \(X\) which in particular contains all absolutely summing operators on \(X\). For instance, if \(T:X\to X\) is compact and if \(\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} n^{-1}a_n(T)\log n<\infty\) where \(\{a_n(T)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\) are its approximation numbers, then \(T\) is strongly triangular. In the case of Hilbert spaces, an operator \(T\) is strongly triangular if and only if it is compact and its singular values \(\{s_n(T)\}_{n=1}^\infty\) satisfy the condition \(\sum_{n=1}^\infty n^{-1}s_n(T)<\infty.\) One of the main results of the paper is that if \(A\) is a sectorial operator on \(X\) with an \(H^{\infty}\)-calculus and \(T\) is a strongly triangular operator such that \(B=(I+T)A\) is sectorial, then \(B\) also admits an \(H^{\infty}\)-calculus. When \(X\) is a Hilbert space, this result is shown to be sharp. For arbitrary Banach spaces, this is a significant extension of the corresponding result obtained recently by \textit{W.\,Arendt} and \textit{C.\,J.K.\,Batty} [Banach Center Publications 75, 17--38 (2007; Zbl 1128.47021)] for the case when \(A\) is invertible and \(T\) is nuclear. The paper contains many other interesting results in this direction which makes it a valuable contribution to the perturbation theory of sectorial operators.
