The authors study the following Volterra integro-differential equation \[ x'(t)=X\left(t,x,\int_{0}^{t}K(t,s)g(x(s))\,ds\right), \tag{1} \] where the kernel function has the form \[ K(t,s)=\sum_{j=1}^{\infty}C_{j}F_{j}(t)G_{j}(s). \] The authors establish a connection between the system (1) and a countable system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). They discuss problems related to the stability of the system (1), as well as applications of the method of normal forms to solving some problems in the qualitative theory of integro-differential equations.
