The paper under review gives an algorithm which transforms a discrete group into another one. As applications, the author gets many counterexamples to an algebraic version of the zero-in-the-spectrum conjecture (C). He proves that the Baum-Connes conjecture does not imply the algebraic version of (C) for finitely presented groups.
